A Stanly Ranch Wedding in Napa with Lion Dances and a Ramyun Bar

Stanly Ranch weddings happen at the very bottom of Napa Valley, which is the part of Wine Country nobody thinks to tell you about. It is roughly fifty minutes from the Bay Area, it sits on seven hundred acres of what is still a working ranch, and you get there down a long drive lined with eucalyptus. M + S came into their day there with three words and nothing else: fun, celebratory, food. By the end of the night there were lion dancers walking their guests to dinner and a Shin Ramyun bar going strong long after the dance floor emptied out. They hit all three, and they hit them loud.

A Wedding Day With No Wedding Party, and That Was the Point

M + S skipped wedding parties entirely. Nobody on either side.

Their reasoning was so thoughtful that I have kept thinking about it since. They did not want to put that kind of pressure on anybody they love. No standing up in front of a room, no coordinating outfits, no six month group chat. They wanted to start the morning in their own quiet space, the two of them getting ready separately, before the wedding day began.

M got ready with a couple of family members. S got ready with Salty.

Salty is their dog- S adopted him in New York, took him to Chicago, and now he lives with the two of them in Southern California. He walked down the aisle with S. There was also a cake decoration of him at the bottom of the wedding cake. How incredibly cute is that?!

Here is what skipping the wedding party actually bought them: peace. No wrangling eight people into position, no group photo list that runs three pages, no waiting on the one person who cannot find their tie. The morning stayed slow and soft and theirs. And when the day picked up speed later, and it absolutely did, they had already had the quiet part. You cannot go back and get that at 9pm. If you want it, you have to build it in early.

M Made Most of It Herself, and This Is the Version of DIY That Works

M made a lot of this day with her own two hands. The aisle decor. Her bouquet and the boutonnieres. The signage. The wax seals on the place cards, one at a time. She built the faux florals using Sola Wood Flowers and a Rose Morning floral wall that she took apart herself to do it. Her friend Naphan designed the invitations and the RSVPs. S's dad did all the calligraphy on the place cards. M’s dad brought over the pineapple box wedding favor that sat on the tables. Every small thing on those tables had somebody who loves them behind it.

Now, I am usually the photographer gently talking couples out of DIY, because most of the time it lands back on you at 9am on your own wedding day when you are supposed to be getting dressed.

This one worked, and I want to tell you why, because it is repeatable. M did the making, in the months before. Then she handed the running of the day over to Leah at Two Perfect Events and to Abby, the venue coordinator at Stanly Ranch. That is the whole trick. Make what you want to make. Then let the people whose actual job is the day, run the day.

Live Music, Lion Dancers, and a Shin Ramyun Bar

The music started before the ceremony did. M + S came across posts about Moses Lin online, and that was that- they knew immediately he had to be at their wedding. He played the pre ceremony portion only, which sounds like a small window until you sit inside it. Guests walking in, finding their seats, hugging people they had not seen in years, all of it happening over live music instead of a speaker playing something generic. He set the whole tone for the day before anybody said a word, and I loved it.

Cocktail hour opened with lion dancers, and when the hour was up, the lions led every single guest to dinner. Nobody had to be told twice, nobody wandered off to the bar, everybody just followed the drums, and it was so much fun to watch!

The speeches were funny. The music was loud. The lions were roaring.

And then, at the end of the night, after the dancing: a Shin Ramyun bar. Which, honestly? Correct. There is nothing better at 11pm than a hot cup of ramyun when your feet hurt and you have been on the dance floor for two hours straight. M + S told me from the very beginning that food was one of their three words, and they meant it all the way down to the last thing served.

What to Know About Planning a Wedding at Stanly Ranch in Napa Valley

If you are looking at Stanly Ranch as a Napa wedding venue, here is what is worth knowing up front. It is part of the Auberge Resorts Collection, it has eight different ceremony and reception spaces spread across the property, guests can stay on site, and it does catering and dessert in house.

And here is the one nobody mentions: Napa wineries are not allowed to serve liquor. Stanly Ranch is a resort, so it can. If a full bar matters to you, that quietly shortens your Napa list more than you would expect.

For couples planning a Napa Valley wedding from the Bay Area, the drive matters too. Fifty minutes means your people can actually come, celebrate, and get home, or stay over on the property and turn the whole thing into a weekend.

M + S picked it because it was beautiful, and because of one other thing they will happily admit: S's name is in the name of the ranch. Stan. Stanly Ranch. Sometimes the universe just tells you where to get married, and you listen.

Their planning advice, in their own words: your family would not be your family if they did not try your patience at least three times during the planning process. Do not sweat the small stuff.

Cheers to M + S! Thank you for letting me be part of this one. Wishing you long dinners, loud music, more ramyun at midnight, and many, many more Salty adventures. 🥂
